I’m super proud of something pretty inane that I realized a few months back—and I’m going to share it! Because around these parts, I’M the Publisher!
So, buckle up, desk organization nerds. Because this is about how…I label my binder clips. I know! Take a sip of your iced tea, cool yourself with a fan you made with a page from The Good Book (by which I mean, “From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler”), and then read on…if you dare.
Now, for those stationery-kink kindreds who may have stuck around: WHY would we need to ever, ever, ever do this? My answer: stacks. Or rather, stack and stacks.
Do you know what stories are in this pile? Yeah. ME EITHER.

NOW! Feast your eyes!
You only need three things to make these fantastic DIY binder clips: grit…determination…and an Iwatani International PRO2 Culinary Butane Torch.
Oh, wait. Wrong list.
Um, never mind that. It’s…it’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.
HERE we go. Yes, yes. You just need a binder clip, a label (you, could use paper and glue, too, if you want to make this hard), and something to write with! But if you want to get faaaaancy (which, I mean, yes, right?), then here is what I used.
Binder clips: I used these bad boys from Target (pronounced Tar-zhay, please. Again…we’re being faaaaancy.) If you feel like going off-brand, get the clips sized 2 3/16”l x 1 1/4”w (5.6cm x 3.2cm for Canadian stationary nerds, eh?) to work with the label size below.
Labels: Because of my high-print lifestyle™, I already had mailing labels that fit the “spine” part of the binder clips perfectly, which turned out to be Avery 18167 Return Address Labels. All I did was fold them slightly over the ends of the clips to secure!
Ink: I mean, you could technically write with one of those freebie pencils they give out at putt-putt ranges that you “accidentally” take home but then can’t figure out where to keep because it’s too short to put in a standard pencil cup. However, I, faaaaancy Elayne, use an erasable Frixion pen because they are my very, very favorite! (I love these pens! They fit my lifestyle perfectly—because I make a lot of mistakes while writing longhand, but I also like to pretend I don’t make mistakes, by writing in pen.) In this case, going Frixion means I can super-easily reuse them when it’s time for the next story.
So, there you go! A binder clip idea whose time has come! Now I just throw my manuscripts in a giant stack inside the locker next to my desk, clip side out, and it’s always easy to grab and work when inspiration strikes!
I mean, it’s the little things in life, right?
What wacky desk tricks or insane organization habits have you cultivated?
Your label mate,
Elayne
