There’s something about a new year that feels like a freshly made bed to me. Is it the rarity? 😂 Perhaps. But it’s also the feeling that we haven’t yet eaten Ritz crackers all over this new set-up—that it’s just waiting for us, soft, inviting, and ready to dive into when it’s time.
Trying to harness that feeling of “getting ready” (even if I don’t yet know for what), I’ve been spending this first week of 2024 thinking about how I want to be more me this year: online, offline, with my family, and in my work. I’ve cleaned my desk and my “desk-ish” spot in the bedroom. I’ve refreshed my actual website (you may have spied that I made myself a little Substack wordmark with one of my gouache paintings of ice cream in it to coordinate), I’ve redone my vision boards for the year, and I’ve been thinking a lot about how I want to roll out paid critiques and school visits.
All this is to say: I didn’t know what I wanted to post this week (which is unusual for me). I have tons of drafts I thought of wrapping up, but instead of wading back into something deeper quite yet, I thought, why not keep this week light and airy? (I’ll return to my old, overthinking-it ways soon enough.)
Here are some writing jokes (that, for total transparency, I did not write—in some cases, I adapted them, but they are classics for a reason). I hope they give you a chuckle!
What do you get when you cross a writer with a looming deadline?
A really, really clean desk.
Why couldn't the writer get warm?
No matter what they did, they were surrounded by drafts.
How many writers does it take to change a lightbulb?
(Expletive) you...they don't need to change a thing! ;)
Ha! But, really, how many writers does it take to change a lightbulb?
Ten--one to do it, nine to complain that they had that same idea.
Funny, but seriously--how many writers does it take to change a lightbulb?
Only one, BUT the lightbulb's change must be believable, so it will take at least a year to determine the plot, setting, characters, point of view, and conflict.
If you’ve got any other good writing/creator jokes, pop them in the comments! :)
Your refreshing (if silly) friend,
Elayne
