Aww I love these Elayne! I was just thinking about these the other day. When I was a kid and they used to have these in the books, I used to love looking at how many people had checked the book out previously and when the last time that was! I always found it fascinatingβ and now we have no way of knowing! Unless someone happens to leave the receipt in the bookβ that they more than likely used as a bookmark!
And I too have trouble marking up my own books. I didnβt so much mind with text books, as I thought that was the point, though it was distracting when buying a used textbook, and somebody highlighted something I wouldnβt have! But now, I have been underlining passages in books that resonate with meβ now if I actually ever go back and relook at theseβ¦. Not sure, but at least should I ever do that, Iβll know what I thought was interesting! Though, I donβt know about marking up a picture book! Those seem too precious!
Bridgitte, I miss the fleeting connections from the old cards, too! Especially at the school library for, say, my elementary school, where I could tell that this or that friend had already borrowed the book I was getting. Which reminds me that I wasn't always so careful about book stuff in some ways because I definitely made myself "fake check out" stuff and glued it inside some of my books as a kid! (And would try to get my brother to borrow them, LOL!)
One funny story: I borrowed a collection of E. B. White essays from a library in Australia, and though they had gone digital for borrowing, that book still had it's pocket from the previous system, so I could see it had been in circulation since 1978. Which is pretty remarkable (and I loved being able to easily see). https://www.instagram.com/p/CLBLJl-H1zx/
That's a good point about the different kind of books! I definitely think of picture books as especially untouchable! LOL! And then, like, crossword/activity books, of course, I would write in those... So funny.
