Now that January is here, besides the post-holiday-cleanup, college application essay-reading1, and annual planning, there is something else I’m psyched to be doing: Tara Lazar’s Storystorm!
Though this started January 1, the registration remains open through January 7, so there’s still (technically) time to join! There are tons of prizes and superb advice—but I’m not being sarcastic when I say the real treasure is the story ideas you’ll write down along the way.
While you can keep track of your Storystorm ideas a zillion ways, I prefer a basic calendar page on a clipboard (the clipboard makes it harder to misplace—not unlike those giant key fobs at gas stations). You can download a free printable calendar from this very cyber-portal; see below.
Basically, I print out a January calendar—and then write down at least one idea (sometimes several, if I’m on a roll!) on each calendar day….At the end of the month, I had one fantastic piece of paper, teeming with new story ideas!
Me, all the way back in 2023
Here’s this year’s .pdf calendar (which I made for myself) if you want to try it, too.

Here are two previous posts where I’ve yammered about Storystorm before.
As ever, I hope the 2025 writing year fills us with energy, optimism, and love—and all that shines through in our work.
Your “here’s wishing you a perfect storm” friend,

My oldest kid is applying to colleges; thankfully, we’re nearly done with the applications. But, hoo boy, have these changed since I was a teen—and film school applications have not been what any of us expected! Still, we are nearing the finish line!
