I love *all* of this, Bridgitte! First, kudos to you for rereading some books you DIDN'T like the last time. I'm super impressed by the giving of second chances--and that goes for reading, too, LOL! (Though, as you say, sometimes the book really doesn't speak to you--at any age!) And it is a treat to re-read something you enjoyed when you were younger and find you still love it. :)

One thing I have noticed with picture books is that, because they are such quick reads in comparison, my mood does seem more likely to influence me on first readings. Which is part of why I try to read them at least twice before returning them to the library, because I'm surprised at how that second reading can really change my mind on if I love something or not!

I love what you noted about books as physical talismans, too. In that way, it can be as sentimental as a worn baseball glove, or something like that. I have definitely "flipped through" a beloved book without reading it, just to kind of experience it as an object again--and hadn't thought of that at all when I posted this! That's a super interesting thought that I will ponder more! :)

Hugs, lady! I hope your HIGHLIGHTS RETREAT (was I shouting? Sorry, I do that sometimes when I'm envious) was so, so amazing! It looks like it was a fabulous experience--which you richly deserve! :) Yay!
