Wow you literally spoke what I have been feeling since I stopped listening to podcasts . I felt like I was going into a depression relying on them everyday. It was scary, and now that I stopped I noticed I’m going back to doing things I used to like, playing instruments being creative etc. thanks for this
Glad if anything I write helps! It's never easy to find the right balance of getting inspired from outside stuff, and not getting overwhelmed by it, either! Good luck finding what's right for you!
Oh Elayne! This post was soooo relevant to me! I used to listen to podcasts and audiobooks every chance I could. And I always had a book in my bag for the train, etc. My mind was always focused on something but I too realized that I missed my mind wandering time, not taking in any new information and just noticing my surroundings or thinking about other things! As you stated they started to become a chore no longer something I did for fun. So I’ve let them all go—- same thing with the myriad newsletters and social media I used to subscribe to as well. I’m much more selective and I think myself and my writing are all the better for it!
Whew! Glad it's not just me--like you, there was a period where I enjoyed them without it feeling like (much) of a chore, but I think back then, I was looking for a distraction--and now, I'm really not! (I get plenty of that in my normal life, I guess, now! 😂) Hugs, creative spirit!
A thank you to my friend Lisa Billa for sharing a link to this older blog post by Nathan Bransford, "Your mind needs time to wander." https://nathanbransford.com/blog/2024/05/your-mind-needs-time-to-wander
